Welcome to the Democratic Linkages Project. We are enabling Ugandans to participate more meaningfully in democracy

Decentralization of government has taken corruption to lower levels of government such as the Arua district sub-county of Ajia. This implies that establishing a well functioning democracy in Uganda requires civic societies in places such as Ajia to be adequately empowered and informed to demand accountability from their local leaders. Indeed, participation of the civic society will provide the checks and balances essential in curtailing corruption or incompetence, and the resulting deterioration of quality of service delivery by local governments, for example in sectors like health, education and agriculture.

WENIRUDA has worked in partnership with the Anticorruption Coalition of Uganda and other partners to monitor corruption in public institutions and to empower and inform the masses about effective ways of holding local leaders accountable for delivery services of the quality they deserve. We continually monitor projects in Ajia subcounty and have established Integrity Clubs in six schools (with a total membership of over 500 students) to educate young people about fighting corruption.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has funded WENIRUDA through its democratic linkages initiative to enhance participation of citizens of Ajia in monitoring service delivery by their local government. WENIRUDA will provide information on their rights and roles in ensuring proper accountability for government projects in their community. In all, the project will increase people’s participation in government programs and empower them with the skills and procedures to hold their leaders accountable for quality service delivery.

Update: The first phase of this project has recently been completed and a report submitted to USAID. Pictures from the project are available on Facebook.
